AP Art and Design Portfolio Coaching

Beginning Fall 2021

Coaching and encouraging students for a successful AP Art and Design portfolio submission!

The AP Art and Design Portfolio

Completing the AP Art and Design portfolio exam can be very beneficial, as students can earn credit to apply to many different colleges.

Whether your school offers the AP Art and Design course or not, you are still eligible to complete this portfolio exam! I will coach any student in completing a successful portfolio and assist you in submitting it to the College Board! If you have a current art teacher, I can also communicate with them about your goals in order to further assist in your success. This is an excellent opportunity for homeschool or online students searching for an independent study as well.

It can be difficult to get your foot in the door of AP Art and Design as a high school student — especially if your school doesn’t offer this course. Do not be discouraged! You CAN complete this portfolio exam if you have the passion to create a body of artwork inspired by an inquiry you are passionate about and adhere to the portfolio exam requirements. Through this program, I will coach you and help you to understand these requirements, providing support and encouragement along the way. I will help you find your artistic voice and guide you through your journey of creating 15 works of art focused on an inquiry question/theme you are passionate about.

Students need not necessarily have prior drawing skills to take the course. Although helpful, 2D and 3D portfolio submissions do not necessarily require drawing elements to successfully complete the portfolio. I will request samples of your work and have an initial consultation with students and parents/guardians.

Ready for AP Art and Design?

Depending on the students’ interests, aptitudes, and skills, I will evaluate students to determine whether they are a good candidate for completing the Pre AP Art and Design track (coaching to better prepare for submission the following year) or the AP Art and Design track (coaching to complete portfolio submission this year). Refer to the chart to see which of the following tracks you align more closely with.

I am excited to work with you at whatever stage you are at in the AP Art and Design portfolio creation and/or submission process!

If the student is on the AP Art and Design track (best for current high school juniors and seniors who are prepared for this challenge), we will discuss which portfolio type is best for the student (Drawing, 2D Design or 3D Design, based on their strengths and interests. There is no urgency to make a portfolio decision at the beginning. It is good to keep an open mind about your possibilities for the first couple of months of our work together.
